AstraZeneca has confirmed that it has received a notification from the South African Competition and Markets Authority (SCA) that the company is seeking to introduce a prescription drug in the South African market for a “longer term” version of azithromycin, which is sold by AstraZeneca to treat “bacterial infection” in patients infected with the bacteria.
The company is seeking approval from the SCA for the treatment of patients who have previously received azithromycin for infections of the stomach and intestines and the kidneys, with an additional three months’ supply of the medicine pending the outcome of the Phase III trial that will be conducted later this year.
The company will have the exclusive rights to produce and market azithromycin for the treatment of patients with a bacterial infection. It will have the rights to prescribe and produce a generic version of azithromycin for the treatment of the infection in South Africa.
